Never Saw Her Alive by Demola Adeleke (See_demmy)

"More water please pleaseeeee!" I screamed as I felt another round of agonizing pain warring against my eye balls. As if they were pricked with a sewing needle, the pain rose violently like the sun trying to dry up the red sea in less than a second as Tunde sprinkled the water on my face and blew both air
and spit into my eyes with one of his thumbs holding my left eye-lid. "Wait wait" I yelled as I remembered how he lost his incisors to a fight with one of the agberos who beat him black and blue for philandering with Saki; the popular fish monger in the next street whom had earlier accepted the conductor's proposal before Tunde's intrusion, "you are just spitting ni jorh" I said angrily.
The pain gradually subsided and I was as relieved as a lamb who suddenly got to know that the big lion gazing fiercely at it was only a statue. I gently opened my eyes and closed it back, then opened it again to be sure of what I noticed was true...
As if the rainbow was descending on a thousand of prisms, the whole sitting room was filled with colours; red, green, yellow, and blue were the only familiar ones while others seemed new to me, except from the black wall clock which happened to share the same colour with the world I've lived for over 8 years now.
I began to look around like there was a voice calling my name at every angle of the massive living room. "what's wrong!" Tunde asked in a trembling voice," is it your walking stick?" he inquired again as he noticed I was about to take a pace forward..."I can see!!! Tunde! I can now see!!" My voice immediately sounded louder than a karaoke "I can see your upper jaw without 2 teeth" we both screamed aloud which caught the gate-keeper's attention and afterwards, he joined us and the 3 of us rejoiced for the restoration of my damaged sight... "God is indeed wonderful", said Tunde "he only fell from the stairs and his eyes were corrected" he replied John's question on how it all happened...
At this time, all I wanted to see was Ronke, the only friend who stood by my side during my encounter with the dark world. Mum and dad wouldn't return until the following day and for my sister, she has gone back to school and only comes home during the semester break. "Ronke deserves to be seen first" I convinced my thought. "It's either 53 or 54" I soliloquized as I tried to remember the number of her house at about 7 streets away from ours.
"I'm gonna make her my girlfriend today" I kept talking to myself but Tunde couldn't hear me since the car stereo was at a very high volume and his mind was completely at Wizkid's latest single recently released the previous day which he was listening to...
I had promised him 5,000 naira if he agreed to take me to Ronke's house and without the slightest hestitation, he accepted since it's a secret that will never be revealed to either mum or dad...
We drove along the road and passed through my primary school and was so happy to see that tall building where I spent my first 6 years at school and also the same place I met "Aderonke" my trusted friend who borrowed me some strength to fight depression when my life was in total shambles...
"Please help us! Please! Please!" there was a hullabaloo at the road side. It seemed like a fresh accident just occurred and people were gathered at the side of the road so as to help the victims to the hospital, all they needed was a car that would bring them to the hospital and because of this, they waved at all passing vehicles and ours wasn't an exception.
Tunde trod on the clutch and the car slowed down, "do you want to stop or what?" I asked him as I noticed he was about to apply the brake, he nodded, signifying that he wanted to stop the car so he could help bring the victims to the hospital. "And what about the Ronke's house that we are going?" I asked, "if you stop for this people, then forget the 5,000 that I promised you" I vowed.
He quickly complied with my wish and trod on the accelerator... The people who had already had their hopes raised that a car had finally stopped shouted while some cried bitterly to see us run away. We eventually got to Ronke's house and got down from the car. We were about knocking on their gate when her parents rushed out of the house, entered the car, and drove off.
I approached one of the people that was outside the house to know what has happened and there, we were told that they just received a call that their Ronke had a very terrible accident. "Where!! Where did it happenned???" I immediately forgot the rules of grammar..."beside Total filling station" the lady replied, Jesus! That can't be! The same spot we were stopped earlier!....
Tunde and I got into the car and rushed back to where the victims were lying but ............
